Call for Testimonies/Papers: The White Savior Complex in International Development
Call for Testimonies/Papers
We would like to invite short papers for the forthcoming edited volume: “The White Savior Complex in International Development. Theory, Practice and Lived Experiences.” This anthology is to be published by Daraja Press (www.darajapress.com) in 2022.
Uniting scholars and practitioners from around the world, this edited volume will address white saviorism as one of the perennial underbelly challenges of the global development aid industry. A collective of international authors will analyze how development practices can undermine voices in the Global South and perpetuate the myth of white/western superiority. This book is divided into two interrelated sections:
- ● Section 1: Theories and Concepts of White Saviorism
- ● Section 2: Voices and Experiences from Development Practitioners and Recipients.
Call for Testimonies/Papers
This call seeks contributions for Section 2 in the form of testimonials, stories, personal accounts, narratives or lived experiences about white savior practices in international development. These short papers (max 2000 words) should address how development/aid practitioners in the Global South have experienced white saviorism first-hand. This includes all forms of aid and humanitarian assistance, and at all levels, including small-scale projects, advocacy, policy, partnerships, and field implementation.
Call for Testimonies/Papers
We invite you to submit an abstract of your proposed story/reflection for consideration (up to 150 words). The deadline for submission of abstracts is May 21, 2021.

Anonymous submissions can also be considered, if needed, upon discussion with short-listed authors. While we request you to submit the abstract in English, we are also happy to consider a final submission in your native language, provided translation is available. Please note, this call is for current or previous aid practitioners from the Global South, as well as any individuals or collectives from the Global South (or indigenous people) who have witnessed white saviorism. A small stipend may be offered to compensate for your time, upon availability of funds.
